Is it possible i could get diabetes?

I eat a lot of food and i do not get a lot of meat or vegetables and fruit. I love eating sugar and My mom keeps telling me i will possible get diabetes. I do not know what to do?

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is caused by your antibodies attacking the insulin producing cells in your pancreas. It is genetic, but there is no one know cause. It is not probably caused by eating too much sugar, but just to be sure, you should try to eat healthy and exercise if you are scared you might get it.

YES it is possible that you may Develop diabetes and if anyone in your family has had it then you risk may be increased. Poor diet is NOT a cause of diabetes BUT it may be a risk factor, try to eat a good well balanced diet and keep the sugar to a minimum Please do not try anything that other people on this site suggest as they may have vested interests in the matter.

If you develop diabetes has a lot to do with a number of risk factors:

Genetics- Who in your family has diabetes.
Ethnic makeup- native american, hispanic, etc have a MUCH higher rate of diabetes.
Age- the older you are, the more likely you are to develop type 2 (40-senior citizens).
Physical activity- If you are a couch potato, your risk is increased.
Weight- anything over average/normal weight is a risk.

It really has a lot to do with risk factors. You may not have anybody in your family with diabetes, be fit and active, and still have diabetes. You could be a fat slob and not ever get diabetes even though you are obese. It really is a crap shoot, if you will. It depends on the combination of risks that you have. Your mom and sister may have it, but by being thin and very active, you don’t develop it.

Eating excessive amounts of sugar does not increase you odds, as long as your weight is normal, and you are fit. Sugar does not cause diabetes. People who eat a lot of sugar, do tend to be overweight, and not fit, and thus at a higher risk of diabetes. Your blood doesn’t care where the sugar comes from, M&M’s, a banana, orange, rice or potato. The body processes it the same way (albeit faster or slower). Simple carbs. (like M&M’s and sugar for your coffee), may cause your blood sugar to rise more quickly than a complex carb with a lot of fiber. If you are diabetic, then you would need to treat those carbs (insulin dependent) with different types of insulin. A non-diabetic’s body doesn’t care. It just "shoots" the right amount of insulin into the body. Same amount of calories, doesn’t really matter.

Maybe your mom is trying to draw attention to a more healthy diet, for your long-term well being. Trust me, what you can eat now and not gain weight, will change with age. If you develop healthy eating habits now, it will be much easier to stay healthy. Think of all the men you see with pot-bellies. Why??? They are eating the same way they always have, BUT their bodies are burning it differently as they age! Age has a way of sneaking up behind you. And I do mean BEHIND!!!! In 20 years, just look at your behind in a mirror and you’ll know what I mean. I would try to listen to your mom. I’m sure she only has your best intentions at heart.

Eat what you want rarely, and eat what you should the rest of the time.
