is it possible to be physically fit and have diabetes?

im pretty fit. i have little fat and i work out regularly but i have been experiencing tiredness for as long as i could remember; even on days i sleep in. im 18 years old, is it still possible for me to have type 1 diabetes?

Certainly possible. Type 1 Diabetes is caused by the immune system attacking the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. Nobody knows specifically why it happens but…

Tiredness could be a symptom of many things, not just diabetes.

I was diagnosed a year ago and I was pretty thin, never overweight in my life. It’s probably the most random disease you’ll ever get :P

Yes- some people just have the genes for it. I know a few people who are very fit but they have diabetes. You should see your doctor for tests.

I think type one diabetes is hereditary. Does anyone in your family have it? If they do then it’s totally possible. I have a friend I’ve known since 6th grade. He has diabetes and he’s really fit and skinny. Also Nick Jonas is diabetic.

Ever heard of Steve Redgrave the rower? He won his last Olympic gold after he became a diabetic.

If you think you may be diabetic get a blood test at your doctor’s, if you suffer from chronic tiredness then also get checked for anaemia and thyroid problems.

Oh, yes, there are several top-class athletes who are diabetic. However, if you’re just worried because you feel tired, go and see your doctor. There can be many, many causes for this apart from diabetes. You may just be a little run-down or even simply a little anaemic.

You might have type 1 or type 2; you might be anaemic; you could just have a poor diet or even a sleep disorder thats stopping you recharging when your at rest.

Best thing to do is see your doctor (or the nurse at your local clinic).

Dont worry about having diabetes, its a serious condition but it’s not some big scary thing that you should get stressed over.

The sooner you get diagnosed the better and if you do have it, your doc will help you every step of the way. Insulin aside (not all diabetics take insulin, i certainly dont) its all about diet, lifestyle and ‘possibly’ a couple of tablets a day.

So get to your doc and have a wee chat; maybe you just need a bit of a vitamin boost? But he’s the one to tell you.

    Good luck.

Being tired all the time is one of the symptoms. But you fail to mention others. For example, constant hunger, weight loss, frequent urination, blurred vision, excessive thirst, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness, and/or rapid shallow breathing. If you experience a combination of these symptoms see a doctor right away. You don’t want to wait because it can be life threatening.

I’m type 1, 13 years old, and I’m fit! It’s completely possible! But your symptoms don’t sound much like diabetes. Just sounds to me like you are tired regularly. Drinking loads, peeing loads, not eating much, and losing weight are the main symptoms. Go for a blood test if you are still unsure.
    hope this helps!! :)

YES TYPE 1 DIABETES IS NOT CAUSED BY BEING FAT OR UNFIT. SCIENTISTS DON’T KNOW THE CAUSE BUT THINK IT COULD BE GENETIC – PLEASE DON’T GET CONFUSED BETWEEN TYPE 1 AND 2!

Just because a person is fit and or thin does not mean they can not have diabetes. Diabetes is caused in two ways in type 1 little or no insulin is produced and this means that the blood glucose levels are not controlled. In type 2 the person tends to build up a thing called insulin resistance this means that they are producing the insulin but that it is less efficient at controlling blood glucose levels. The only way to know for sure is to go to your doctor and get them to test for it.

Absolutely. I’m in good physical shape, yet I have type 1 diabetes. I was diagnosed at age 23.

If you think you might have it, arrange to be tested. However, there are many conditions which can cause the symptoms you describe. Don’t focus just on diabetes. It can be a number of things, such as a thyroid condition, chronic fatigue syndrome, even mononucleosis.

See your doctor and go from there. Type 1 diabetes can be hereditary but not always. There is NO history of it in my family. I’m the "lucky" one. Type 2 is generally related to obesity, lack of exercise and poor diet.

    Yes, very much.

Google something like sports stars with diabetes and see what comes up.

Someone mentioned Steve Redgrave. There’s a good start.

Tiredness is one of many many symptoms of diabetes, it’s also a symptom of many other things.

It’s possible, although if tiredness is your only symptom i’d say not.

Maybe you are just over-working, pushing yourself too hard.
Do you eat enough carbs in your diet to cover all the work outs you do?
    A body needs fuel.

Do you eat a lot of iron rich foods? Anaemia, Lack of iron, can lead to chronic tiredness, and not a lot else.

Bottom line, see your doctor. There could be 101 reasons why you’re tired.

    Good luck, and don’t worry.
