According to recent studies conducted by the Pritikin Longevity Center, diabetes starts from too much fat in the diet and insufficient exercise, not malfunction of the pancreas as previously thought. The pancreas continues to produce insulin when you have diabetes but the body becomes insulin resistant. Research has shown that over 90% of diabetes cases can be CURED with diet and exercise. That means that you don't have to have limbs removed due to diabetes-induced gangrene. You don't have to go blind or suffer cardiovascular abnormalities because of diabetes. You can actually REVERSE these conditions with diet (nutrition, not weight loss) and exercise, and the removal of parasites and candida.

Watch the 8-minute non-profit video http://www.rawfor30days.com/view.html , about diabetes diet.
Best of luck.
References :
The truth of the matter is food. Overweight people get type 2 because they over eat and destroy many beta and alpha cells with control the blood sugar. When you are overeating all the time you overwork your cells which control your bloodsugar resulting in the death of a lot of those cells causing diabetes.
References :
Obesity has been linked to Type 2 diabetes, but it's important to understand their are two types of diabetes - Type 1 and Type 2. Type 2 makes up a majority of the diabetic population (90%).

However, I feel it's still important to know that with Type 1, which is what my 5-year-old son has, obesity, diet and exercise are not linked. Scientists are not sure what the cause of Type 1 is, but the most popular theory now is that it is a mixture of genetics and some envioronmental trigger (like a virus).
References :
Too much fat on the blood cells blocks the insulin from getting into the cells and doing its job (imagine a huge bouncer getting in the way when you try to get into the bar). This causes elevated blood glucose ("high blood sugar"), which damages the body in many ways, including kidney damage, blindness, neuropathy (which can lead to amputation), heart attack, stroke, etc.
References :
I'm not sure of the dynamics behind it, but yes, fat (particularly milkfat) is the major cause of type 2 diabetes. For many years, it was thought to be sugar, but that is just an old myth. The primary criteria are, 1. genetic predisposition, 2. sedentary lifestyle (lazy), 3. poor diet (too much junk food), and 4. being overweight. That's about it. I was guilty of all four, but you don't have to have all four to qualify. Links available on request.
References :
The oldest and finest educational facility on the planet,

It is not known if fat causes diabetes. Fat/obesity can be linked to diabetes but correlation does not mean causation. There are so many factors that are attributed to diabetes. It is not good to be overweight, that being said look at it this way; some diabetics are overweight but not all over wight people are diabetic. Mary Tyler Moore is diabetic and she is by no means "fat". Diabetes is a killer but taken care of it can be managed just as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Seeing a dietitian and following the American Diabetics Association's diet is the best thing you can do. Also manage your stress level that can make sugar go up. Any infections or sickness can also affect one's blood sugar. Take care!!
References :
having extra fat causes the insulin to have extra area to cover before it can reach it's target cell... so it may not be uptaked. That would be Type II DM. If it isn't taken care of... you will have all the related problems with DM... could lose limbs, vision... not good.
References :
http://www.nih.gov/
