How does diabetes cause weight loss?
Can anyone explain in detail how diabetes can cause weight loss…… because of the low amount of insulin food isnt broken down and so energy is not absorbed or something like that? Thanks

Weight loss became a nightmare for me until I tried colon cleanse. I realize they say that pills will not work, but they definitely worked for me, and they’ve been shown on CNN too. well if ur body cannot use sugar for energy, it starts using fat and if u run out of fat it starts using muscle

When you eat foods that contain carbohydrate, they are either used immediately as energy, or stored for later as fat reserves. Insulin plays a vital part in this process, as it unlocks the cells which receive this energy. Without it the carbohydrate ends up as waste sugar floating around in the blood stream, unable to be used.

Actually, a lot of weight loss in diabetes is due to water loss. When you have diabetes, your kidneys can’t reabsorb all of the sugar, and so osmosis causes a lot of the water filtered through the kidneys to not be reabsorbed. Instead, it is excreted along with the large amount of sugar (glucosuria). The result is that people with diabetes tend to urinate a lot. A lot of body weight is lost in that fashion.

Not everyone who has diabetes has an issue with weight loss. It is people with uncontrolled diabetes and perpetually high blood sugar levels that MAY have an issue with weight loss. You’ve go the concept right. Without insulin carbohydrates can not be used as energy so the body uses fat and then muscle tissue for fuel. Burning fat as fuel causes ketoacidosis which can be a very dangerous problem and can lead to a coma or death. However, this still isn’t always the case – I know quite a few people with out of control type 2 that manage to remain obese!

Here is some information from WebMD on weight loss due to uncontrolled Type 1 diabetes: In people with type 1 diabetes, sugar isn’t moved into the cells because insulin is not available. When sugar builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, the body’s cells starve for nutrients and other systems in the body must provide energy for many important bodily functions. As a result, high blood sugar develops and can cause:
Dehydration. The build up of sugar in the blood can cause an increase in urination (to try to clear the sugar from the body). When the kidneys lose the glucose through the urine, a large amount of water is also lost, causing dehydration.
Weight loss. The loss of sugar in the urine means a loss of calories which provide energy and therefore many people with high sugars lose weight. (Dehydration also contributes to weight loss.)
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Without insulin and because the cells are starved of energy, the body breaks down fat cells. Products of this fat breakdown include acidic chemicals called ketones that can be used for energy. Levels of these ketones begin to build up in the blood, causing an increased acidity. The liver continues to release the sugar it stores to help out. Since the body cannot use these sugars without insulin, more sugars piles into the blood stream. The combination of high excess sugars, dehydration, and acid build up is known as "ketoacidosis" and can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.

Insulin is needed to help the energy the food is broken down to enter the cells and provide the energy they need to keep the body functioning. If the insulin does not work or is not present energy can not get into the cellsso the body thinks it needs more so it starts to burn up and use the bbody’sown fat and muscle supply in the hope of getting some energy into the cells

My partner is type 2 diabetic and takes metformin pills 3 times a day and has not lost weight, he is overweight, I am type 2 diet controlled and about 1st overweight, I do watch my diet and eat healthy foods, he doesn’t he likes is burgers etc.
