DIABETES EXERCISES

How does exercise help diabetes?

Exercise is a great way to help control weight and it also lowers the blood sugar level. It also lowers a person’s risk of heart disease – a condition that is very common in people who have diabetes.

Exercise can also help you feel better about yourself and increase your overall health.

What kind of exercises to be done?

There are no specific exercises for one to do. Choose any cardio exercise (walking, running, cycling, aerobics, skating, warm-ups and cool-downs, tennis, etc.) – anything that increases the heart rate.

Aerobic exercise strengthens the heart and keeps the exerciser’s muscles warm. Strength training builds stamina, while improving both joints and muscles. Warm-ups and cool-downs are essential for the safety of the exerciser.

No matter what kind of exercise one does, make sure to warm up before starting, and cool down when done. To warm up, spend 5 to 10 minutes doing a low-intensity exercise such as walking.

Then gently stretch for another five to ten minutes. Repeat these steps after exercising to cool down.

When you start an exercise program, go slowly. Gradually increase the intensity and length of the workout as one gradually gets more fit.

Consult a doctor about what kind of exercise is right for you, depending on whether one has any other health problems.

1. Aerobic exercise -

Aerobic exercise helps increase heart rate, as well as breathing rate. This makes one breathe more deeply and also makes the heart work harder. It is best to aim for a total of about 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week. Here are some examples of aerobic exercises:

·	Take a brisk walk either outside or on a treadmill

·	Dance classes

·	Swimming

·	Jogging

·	Roller-skating

·	Tennis or badminton

·	Indoor stationary bicycle

2. Strength training -

Strength training, done several times a week, helps build strong bones and muscles. Some ways to do it:

·	Join a gym to do strength training with weights.

·	Lift light weights at home

3. Flexibility exercises -

Flexibility exercises, also called stretching, helps keep joints flexible and reduces the chances of injury during other activities. Gentle stretching for 5 to 10 minutes helps the body to warm up, as well as get ready for aerobic activities.

4. Be on the move throughout the day -

Being active helps burns calories. The more you move around, the more energy one will have.

«	Walk instead of driving whenever possible.

«	Take the stairs instead of the elevator

«	Work in the garden or do some housecleaning every day

«	Walk to the market; park your car ½ kilometer before the market.

Are there any risks associated with exercising for people with diabetes?

There are some mild risks, but the benefits far outweigh the risks. So, its necessary to moderately exercise daily the right way.

Exercise changes the way in which the body reacts to insulin. Regular and strenuous exercise makes the body more sensitive to insulin, and thus, the blood sugar level may suddenly get too low after exercising.

Therefore, it is important to check the blood sugar level before and after exercising, and follow the doctor’s advice as suggested for low blood sugar.

If the blood sugar level is too low or too high right before one starts exercising, it is better to wait until the level improves, and normalizes.

It is also important to keep a check on blood sugar level if exercising in extreme hot or cold conditions, because temperature affects how the body absorbs insulin.

Should one drink plenty of fluids during exercising?

Yes. While exercising, our body uses more fluid to keep the body temperature cool. Therefore, by the time one feels thirsty, he may already be getting dehydrated. Dehydration can seriously affect the blood sugar level in the body.

Drink plenty of fluids, water before, during and after exercise.

What safety tips to follow while exercising?

Exercise can affect and lower the blood sugar level, so pay attention to possible warning signs during workout such as:

·	Sudden change in heartbeat

·	if one starts sweating more

·	feels shaky, anxious or hungry

·	feeling weak or dizzy

If you feel this way, stop exercising and check out on a doctor. It might be hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. It is normally recommended to keep candy, glucose biscuits or juice nearby to treat hypoglycemia.

Exercise tips for people with diabetes:

·	Talk to the doctor about the right exercise for you.

·	Check blood sugar level before and after exercising.

·	Wear the proper shoes and socks, so as to avoid infection and blisters.

·	Drink plenty of fluid before, during and after exercising.

·	Warm up before exercising and cool down afterward.

·	Have some juice handy in case blood sugar level drops too low.

Diabetes is a disease that develops, due to a problem with the hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas. Insulin, controls the glucose in the blood, and how much glucose is absorbed by the cells; which in turn use glucose to produce energy. When insulin is not present, or the body is not using it properly, glucose can’t enter the cells, and stays in the bloodstream producing hyperglycemia, or excess of sugar (glucose) in the blood.

Mango leaves are very useful in controlling diabetes. Take some mango leaves and soak them in water. Keep it overnight then in an empty stomach take this solution. You can also take them in powder form. Dry the leaves of mango tree and make its powder in a grinder. Mix one tablespoon of the dry powder of mango leaves in a glass of water and drink it everyday.

Consume 1 tablespoon juice of bitter gourd (karela) every morning, It may not instantly give results, but will definitely reduce the intensity of the condition.

Fenugreek is a seed used to spice up Indian food. It has also been used as a medicine to treat symptoms that indicate diabetes. The side effects of fenugreek to watch out for are diarrhea, flatulence, and allergic reactions. It has also been said to interact with Coumadin and should be avoided by people who take it. Careful monitoring is necessary and the recommended dose is one or 2 grams of seeds, 3 times a day but also can be taken as a tea.

Tulsi leaves, ten Neem leaves and ten Belpatras taken with a glass of water daily in the morning in an empty stomach work wonders in keeping the blood sugar levels in the body under control.

Natural Diabetes Treatment with Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is helpful for preventing and treating diabetic retinopathy, an eye condition common in diabetics that can cause blindness. Bilberry helps to strengthen the small blood vessels and prevents breakage. The active compounds in bilberry, called anthocyanosides, are especially beneficial for the blood vessels of the eye and improve circulation to the retina. Take between 80 and
160 milligrams of an extract standardized for 25 percent anthocyanidins three times per day.

Cinnamon is also beneficial in lowering sugar levels in the blood. Add three tablespoons of cinnamon in one liter boiling water; simmer for twenty minutes and strain. Consume one liter of this mixture everyday as a part of your home remedy for diabetes.

Take 400 mcg. a day of chromium picolinate makes insulin more efficient helping keep sugar level low. Chromium maintains stable blood sugar levels through proper insulin utilization and can be helpful for people with diabetes and/or hypoglycemia.

Take juice of bilva and parijataka leaves in equal parts for natural remedy of diabetes. Take two teaspoons of it twice a day.

Juvenile Diabetes, also known as type 1 diabetes, is a disease that affects nearly 210,000 children and young adults under the age of 20 with approximately 15,000 new cases diagnosed every year. Diabetes in children commonly occurs during puberty between the ages of 10 to 12 in girls and 12 to 14 in boys and it is also important to note that children whose parents or other siblings have diabetes are at a greater risk of developing the disease themselves.

The sudden onset of juvenile diabetes is caused by the inability of the pancreas to manufacture insulin. It is thought that genetic predisposition and autoimmune dysfunction destroy the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas, rendering them unable to produce insulin, which is needed to control blood sugar levels.

Many times the parents are caught unaware and off guard that their child has diabetes. They have many questions asking how this could happen or what they could have done to prevent it. Unfortunately there is no known way to prevent the onset of juvenile diabetes but if the parent is able to catch the tale-tell symptoms early and their child is positively diagnosed there is less chance of long term complications.

The symptoms of juvenile diabetes are much the same as for adults but children may not recognize that something is wrong because they can be subtle. The early warning signs that parents should be on the lookout for include.

1. Frequent bathroom trips – High blood sugar increases the amount of blood that is filtered through the kidneys, leading to an increase in urinary output.

2. Being thirsty all the time – Dehydration caused by the high urine output leads to an increased thirst.

3. Increased hunger and eating – The lack of insulin keeps the sugar in the blood, starving the cells for the energy they need to function. Because of this perceived energy deficit the body responds with hunger pains.

4. Weight loss – Despite the fact that the child is eating more the body will start to break down it own muscle and fat stores to make up for the perceived loss of energy sources, namely blood glucose.

5. Fatigue – The inability of glucose to cross from the blood stream into the cells causes a loss of energy leading to chronic fatigue. The irregularity in protein and fat metabolism can also lead to fatigue.

6. Increased irritability and depression.

7. Vision problems – High blood glucose levels cause an increase in blood volume which can cause the lens of the eye to swell.

These symptoms can occur alone but because diabetes is a disease that affects entire bodily functions there is a good chance that these symptoms will start slowly but will occur as a group. If one is noticeable it is a good idea to ask your child if they are experiencing any of the other known signs.

The sooner the symptoms of juvenile diabetes are recognized the sooner the child can be taken to the doctor for the proper tests to diagnose this disease. Diabetes in children, while incurable, can be managed successfully with a combination of insulin therapy and diet. Left untreated diabetes can cause a whole host of complications that can seriously affect any diabetics ability to live a normal life.

Diabetes is a disorder that affects the way your body uses digested food to maintain health, growth and energy.

Normally, the food you eat is broken down into glucose, which is a type of sugar. It becomes the major source of energy for your body. This glucose is carried in your bloodstream to be used by your cells for growth and energy.

But if your body doesn’t have enough of a hormone called insulin, the glucose in your blood can’t reach your cells. Insulin is naturally produced by your pancreas, which is a gland about the size of your hand, located behind your stomach.

If you have type 2 diabetes your pancreas may not produce enough insulin. That means your fat, muscle, and liver cells can’t use the glucose effectively and it builds up in your blood. The glucose must go somewhere, so it overflows into your urine and passes out of your body.

When that happens, your body is left without its main source of fuel.

According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, more than 20 million people in the United States have diabetes. Of those people, 14.6 million are diagnosed by a doctor, but 6.2 million are undiagnosed and may not know they have diabetes.

Ninety to 95 percent of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a very serious illness. In fact, diabetes is the main cause of kidney failure, limb amputation, and blindness in American adults.

People with diabetes are also two to four times more likely than people without diabetes to develop heart disease.

Pre-diabetes is also a serious condition. It’s also called impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFG). Having pre-diabetes means your the level of glucose in your blood glucose are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.

But pre-diabetes means you’re at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Your doctor can test you to see if you have pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes.

The first thing when doctors suspect somebody with diabetes, they do some tests to make sure that their assumptions are true. Such a test to diagnose diabetes is a glucose test. However, this is just the beginning of the diagnosing process of diabetes. The other things that doctors must take into consideration when diagnosing a person with diabetes is wether they have any of the diabetes symptoms, their medical history and of course a pysical exam is required to proper diagnose diabetes. What doctors also have to keep in mind is that people who are very ill will have a very high blood sugar, even if they do not suffer from diabetes. Furthermore, some medications that you might take can also change the levels of glucose in your blood.

The most important of all aspects when diagnosing diabetes is a high level of sugar in your blood. This test is given to people after a night where they did not eat anything after 12 o’ clock. To diagnose a person with diabetes after such a test, he/ she must have a value above 140 mg/dl and to be even more sure, this test in diagnosing diabetes must be given at least twice. A person that does not suffer from diabetes has a sugar level about 90 mg/ dl. The second test given to people to diagnose diabetes is a tolerance test with oral glucose. The person who has to take this test must not eat or drink anything for at least 11 hours, in order the diabetes test be certain. However, water is allowed. The first thing that doctors do when starting this diabetes test is to draw

blood from that person. Then he/ she is given a drink that has a very big amount of sugar in it. After half an hour, they test that person’ s blood with this diabetes test. They do the same procedure again after an hour, two and three hours. For this diabetes test to work, a person must be in good health, that is he/ she must not suffer from any diseases or illnesses. Another thing to remember is that before taking this diabetes test you should not smoke or drink any coffee.

The diabetes test with oral glucose tolerance is done by measuring in three hours the glucose level in ones blood almost five times. In a person that has diabetes, after drinking the level will rise, but then fall back down very quickly. On the other hand,in a person that does not have diabetes the glucose level will fall down in time.

You will need to adopt a special diabetes diet once you are diagnosed with this condition. Basically, this is just one of the changes that you must make, to improve your health.

A diabetes diet is based on the food pyramid designed for diabetics. The food pyramid is a great foundation for you to use to begin learning how to eat correctly to keep your blood sugar level in the right range. A diabetic has to watch their carbohydrate intake, too, because these turn to sugars in the body. Eating the same types of foods at the same time each day can keep your blood glucose levels more stable.

If you have diabetes, you need to learn about the benefits of adding soluble fibers to your diet. These can be found in many different vegetables and fruits. The reason why they work so well for diabetics is that they slow down glucose absorption in the intestine. This decreased absorption can help keep your blood glucose level from getting too elevated, which can cause a hyperglycemic reaction.

The kidney bean is one wonderful source of soluble fiber. In fact, this bean has the highest level of soluble fiber found in a food when it is cooked, which makes it ideal for a diabetic. Insoluble fibers can also greatly help diabetics keep their blood glucose levels controlled as well. Insoluble fibers, like bran and whole grains, can help keep your intestinal tract clean and this helps prevent glucose staying in your intestine to be absorbed later, which can cause your blood glucose to be uncontrollable.

Several tips regarding your diet are recommended by The American Dietetic Association to help you maintain a healthy glucose level. Starches are one food group that is highly recommended. Six servings of cereal, bread, and starchy vegetables are recommended per day. Black beans, corn, and garbanzo beans are a starch that can be implemented into your diet as well. It is recommended that you implement the five-a-day plan by the ADA. This plan consists of eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily and, of course, you should eat sugar sparingly.

It is important that you visit a dietician when you are diagnosed with diabetes so that you can learn exactly what your body requires to work well and to keep your blood glucose levels stable. The dietician can also help you to determine the effect that your weight, activity level, and other factors have on your blood glucose levels. This is important to determine so that you can keep your blood sugar controlled and prevent further diabetes related complications. To locate a dietician in your area, you can call the American Association of Diabetes Educators at 1-800-342-2382. They will be able to help you locate someone who can help you learn more about how to eat when you have a condition like diabetes.

You may find it difficult to have to adjust to a diabetes diet. However, the sooner you make the changes, the better it is for your health

There are many counsel symbols and symptoms of diabetes. Both diabetes capture 1 and variety 2 have the same symbols and symptoms. They both show glut glucose in the blood and not enough glucose receiving absorbed into the cells. The debate there is high blood glucose in capture 1 diabetics is because there is a require of insulin as the body is receiving attacked by its own insulin producing beta cells. In letters 2 diabetic there glut glucose because the body is developing insulin resistance. Pregnant sometimes run the expose of getting gestational diabetes as the pregnancy hormones resisted insulin.

Some of the general advise signs and symptoms contain open to the toilet more regularly to urinate, you mislay influence swiftly lacking explanation, you feel bushed, numbness in your limbs, there is a hurt of idea or is blurring, you get dry skin and your bruises take long to cure.

The logic you will be urinating frequently is because there is a lot of glucose in your blood so the kidney is wearisome to attenuate it with water from the blood, hence your bladder is always plump. This is also a debate why you will be getting hungry more often. Because the kidney is pleasing water out of your blood to insipid the glucose, it will defer you dehydrated and you will then penury to down a lot of water.

The burden passing is more noticeable in a class 1 than a category 2, as it happens more leisurely in a manner 2 diabetic. The sense for the burden death is that the pancreas stops making the insulin as the body’s immune method is attacking the insulin producing beta cells. The body starts to use the muscle and fat for energy as there is no energy could be acquired from the glucose that is being absorbed.

The argue for suspicion weary and fatigue is because there is not enough energy unfilled. Because there is no glucose that is being absorbed into the cells for energy, the cells gain to feel tattered out. If you have high blood glucose, it will break the edgy approach especially the hands, feet, legs and arms. The limbs might indigence to be amputated if there is a need of circulation to them. The lack of eyesight or blurriness occurs when the blood sweetie altitude increases. Increased blood darling levels will also reason skin evils.

Therefore you should consult your surgeon if you are having more than one of these symptoms so that he can limit our blood glucose levels. It is better to get it checked out sooner, so that the therapy can be started ahead as well as preventing any complications from episode.

Exercise is an integral part of life for everyone. This becomes especially true in the case of a person with diabetes, in which case it is part of the treatment of diabetes as well. For a diabetic exercise should be a daily routine. Daily exercise would help a diabetic person to have good blood sugar control in addition to making him or her physically fit. Daily exercise also would make a diabetic person less susceptible for a heart attack and nerve damage from diabetes.

Exercise improves blood sugar control

Exercise provides great benefits to diabetics and it plays an excellent role in controlling the blood sugar. A properly designed exercise schedule in combination with a healthy diet is the recipe for success for a person with diabetes. When you do physical activity your muscles take up the glucose from the blood circulation and use it for the muscular activity thus maintaining a normal blood glucose level. Exercise also increases the tissue sensitivity to insulin making the effect of insulin more effective thus further helping to reduce the blood glucose level.

Exercise reduces weight

Exercise is also helps people with diabetes to reduce weight. Weight gain is closely associated with type-2 diabetes. Exercise decreases the fat stores and thus decreases the extra demand that is put on the already compromised beta cells.

Exercise decreases the need for diabetic medication

Exercise reduces insulin resistance of the tissues and makes body tissue more responsive to the action of insulin. If you have only mild diabetes, a combination of exercise and dietary control may be the only form of intervention needed for your diabetes control. Even in persons who have more severe degree of diabetes exercise would decrease the need for diabetic medication because of decreased insulin resistance.

Exercise improves circulation

Most of the complications that are associated with diabetes are related to impairment of circulation that is caused by diabetes. This is especially true for those who develop diabetic foot as a complication of diabetes. Exercise improves circulation especially to arms and legs and thus may prevent development of diabetes related complications.

Exercise improves cholesterol level

Heart attack (myocardial infarction) is one of the major causes of death in people with diabetes. Exercise would increase the good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) and lower the bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol). Exercise also reduces the triglyceride levels. By improving the cholesterol values exercise provide increase protection from heart attack diabetic patients.

Exercise lowers blood pressure

Diabetic patients are highly prone to complications of high blood pressure. Regular exercise would lower blood pressure and thus may protect diabetic patients from hypertension (high blood pressure) and its complications.

It is clear from the above discussion that exercise is a very crucial component in the life of a person with diabetes. Regular exercise, in combination with a healthy diabetic meal would prove to be of significant benefit for a people with diabetes.

Diabetes:

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which body does not produce or produce less insulin compared to healthy individual or body develops resistance to insulin (body does not respond to insulin).

Most foods that we consume finally enter into the blood in form of carbohydrate, fat & protein. From blood, these nutrients enter into cells. Insulin is required for this entry of glucose into cells. Body cells utilize carbohydrate & fat for energy & growth.

Because of less insulin or resistance to insulin in diabetes, blood sugar cannot enter into cells & remain in blood resulting in high blood sugar.

Studies have shown that supplements like chromium, alpha lipoic acid & vanadium plays an important role in the management of diabetes. You can get details on diabetes at http://www.truevalue4money.com/diabetes/diabetes.html

Chromium supplements in diabetes:

Diabetes is associated with low concentrations of chromium in blood, so, an early, long-term addition of chromium to the standard therapy has been recommended in several studies. Some latest clinical reports also support the safety and therapeutic value of chromium supplementation for the management of high cholesterol and sugar in subjects with diabetes.

Chromium increases insulin receptor numbers & insulin binding to cells. Since chromium acts by increasing insulin efficiency, so lower amount of insulin is required in presence of chromium.

A clinical study published in ‘Diabetes Care. (2006, August)’ has shown that chromium supplementation in subjects with type 2 diabetes significantly improves insulin sensitivity and glucose control. Chromium supplementation also reduced body weight gain and fat accumulation

A latest review article published in Diabetes Technol Ther. 2006 December has mentioned that 13 of 15 clinical studies involving a total of 1,690 subjects reported significant improvement in at least one outcome of glycemic control. (Glycemic control is a medical term used for blood sugar levels in a person with diabetes) Beneficial effects of chromium supplementation included reduced blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels and reduced requirements for drugs for diabetes.

Reduction in blood sugar & improvement in insulin sensitivity with chromium results in decrease risk for diabetes complications.

Alpha lipoic acid in Diabetes:

Alpha lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant, which is produced in the body & also present in food. High blood sugar in diabetes increases free radical formation in body, which leads to additional complications of diabetes like atherosclerosis, heart problems, nerve damage & cataract. Antioxidant decreases free radicals in body & decreases risk of complications.

There are number of publications confirming beneficial effect of lipoic acid in therapy of many diseases, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, degenerative processes in neurons, diseases of joints,

A recent clinical study on diabetic patients treated with alpha lipoic acid was published in ‘hormones (Athens). 2006 Oct-Dec 5(4)’. The result of the study has proved that short-term oral alpha-lipoic acid treatment increases peripheral insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Improvement in insulin sensitivity could improve both blood sugar control and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Peripheral insulin sensitivity gives an idea about how body cells respond to insulin. In diabetes, because of decrease response to insulin by body cells, blood sugar cannot enter into cells causing high blood glucose. Alpha lipoic acid enhances glucose uptake by cells in type 2 diabetes.

Diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage is a complication of diabetes. It is a progressive disease, which can cause pain, loss of sensation and weakness, in the feet and sometimes in the hands. Studies have shown that alpha lipoic acid is effective in management of diabetic nerve damage called neuropathy and it reduces pain associated with neuropathy.

Vanadium supplement in diabetes:

Vanadium is a trace mineral required by the body in small quantities. Numerous studies have shown that vanadium has insulin-like effects in liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue. It may improve glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes.

Along with chromium & alpha lipoic acid, some other supplement like evening primrose oil, fenugreek & some herbs also help in management of diabetes.
