"Previous studies including the Adventist Health Study-2 show that following a vegan diet results in the lowest BMI of any group (lacto-ovo-vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, semivegetarian, nonvegetarian), making them less susceptible to obesity-related cancers." (Tonstad S, Butler T, Yan R, Fraser GE. Type of vegetarian diet, body weight, and prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Care. 2009;32:791-796.)

"The link between diet and cancer is not new. In January 1892, Scientific American printed the observation that "cancer is most frequent among those branches of the human race where carnivorous habits prevail." Numerous research studies have shown that cancer is much more common in populations consuming diets rich in fatty foods, particularly meat, and much less common in countries eating diets rich in grains, vegetables, and fruits. One reason is that foods affect the action of hormones in the body. They also affect the strength of the immune system and other factors. While fruits and vegetables contain a variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals to protect the body, by contrast, recent research shows that animal products contain potentially carcinogenic compounds which may contribute to increased cancer risk." (Minamoto T, Mai M, Ronai Z. Environmental factors as regulators and effectors of multistep carcinogenesis. Carcinogenesis 1999;20(4):519-27.
Skog KI, Johansson MAE, Jagerstad MI. Carcinogenic heterocyclic amines in model systems and cooked foods: a review on formation, occurrence, and intake. Food and Chem Toxicol 1998;36:879-96.)
You might look at 3 decades of peer reviewed and NIH grant research conducted to support this viewpoint. It’s sad how uninformed our professionals are about this topic.

I love your medical reference from an 1892 magazine article. Do you have anything from the current century? Medical opinions from 118 years ago need to be updated.

Crackpot pseudo-science, magic charms, and salads can’t cure cancer. It is best to stick with scientifically validated facts from the legitimate medical community when discussing disease.

Some Lifestyle Changes May Help You Cure Diabetes

You have to lift yourself up. You are the cause of your downfall. You are your best friend. You are your worst enemy…Thus goes the great saying.

The top is always vacant! The wise counsel is in demand everywhere. The best is yet to happen in your life! Life is nothing but a series of endless changes. The moment to moment changes.

You need to apply the very same rules in the treatment and control of diabetes. Some lifestyle changes help you cure the diabetes. There is no doubt about it. The reasoning is simple. Your wrong life styles took you to the portals of diabetes. Now about turn, and walk back. And reach to the place from where you started. This time, your start can not be wrong. Because you have adopted some lifestyle changes. This re-start will take you to the mansion of perfect health!

Have you read the novel, “The Sun Also Rises”? Doesn’t matter, if you have not!

When did you see the sunrise last? Now, you the confirmed diabetes patient, getup from the bed before the sunrise and take a brisk morning walk (not too brisk). That will assist the task of metabolism in the body and help you to maintain the blood sugar level.

On to the breakfast table! Demand your plateful of sprouted moong. Gone are the days of fried potato chips doused in red tomato sauce, full of preservatives! Instead, take the tomato salad, flavored with mint and lime juice!

After the breakfast, take rest for five minutes. It is time for you to check your blood pressure. If you don’t wish to do it daily, do it twice a week. During those good old days you used to take three heavy meals. Vegetables full of spice! Now you have taken a wise decision to take food five to six times, but in small quantities.

Your food consists of seasonal vegetables, fruits, preference for items that have lots of fiber content! You are strictly avoiding polished rice, and instead go for hand-pounded rice, that will get you lots of vitamin B.

Never think of junk food, cream biscuits, and chocolates. Tea and coffee are also not good for the cause of controlling diabetes. Instead go for butter milk.

Why do you worry over the matters over which you should not worry at all? If you say that worry can solve any problem including diabetes, I am prepared to even forgo my sleep and keep on worrying for 24 hours in a day. You know, stress is one of the reasons for diabetes.

So stop worrying and start living! Life is to be lived in its trials, in its tribulations, in its duty and in its beauty.

From the practical point of view, never forget to have periodical checkups at the doctor’s chamber and keep the record of your blood sugar levels!

Weight Loss – the Metabolic Syndrome – Effective Treatment With High-protein Shakes

The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of the most dangerous heart attack risk factors including diabetes and pre-diabetes, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Here are some alarming facts:

1) One quarter of the world adult population has metabolic syndrome.

2) People with metabolic syndrome are twice as likely to die from it, and three times as likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared with people without the syndrome.

3) People with metabolic syndrome have a five times greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

4) Up to 80% of the 200 million people with diabetes globally will die of cardiovascular disease.

5) This puts the mortality rate of metabolic syndrome and diabetes miles ahead of HIV/AIDS and yet the problem is not as well recognized.

Early diagnosis by physicians is key to identifying those at risk and one of the primary treatments is weight loss. Researchers from the University of Ulm, Germany, have found that increased amounts of protein in the diet lead to greater improvement in metabolic syndrome risk factors when compared to consuming a standard level of protein.

The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society in Phoenix, enrolled 110 overweight subjects with the metabolic syndrome who were randomly divided into two groups, and were followed for one year.

For the first three months, during the weight loss phase, those in the high protein group were instructed to follow a diet that supplied about twice the protein that would be obtained from a typical diet. They also replaced two meals a day with a high-protein meal replacement shake. The other group was instructed to eat a standard amount of protein from an all-food diet.

For the remaining nine months of the study – the weight maintenance phase – everyone used one meal replacement shake a day as part of their meal plan, and both groups maintained the level of protein intake in the diet they had consumed during the previous three months.

Everyone lost weight after a year, but the high protein group lost more weight (nearly 25 pounds, compared with about 14 pounds for the standard protein group). They also lost more body fat, and maintained lean body mass. More significant, however, was the finding that at the end of the study, 64 percent of those in the high protein group no longer met the criteria for the metabolic syndrome, compared with 41 percent who consumed the standard amount of protein.

Nearly 47 million Americans have the metabolic syndrome, and the numbers continue to grow along with the rise in obesity. Marion Flechtner-Mors, Ph.D., one of the researchers on the study and head of the Obesity Research Group at the University of Ulm, Germany, said “Effective interventions, such as the use of high protein meal replacements for weight loss, could improve the risk factors associated with the metabolic syndrome and affect the lives of millions of people”.

Top 20 Myths About Nutrition

You rely on nutrition information to help you achieve your health goals Here are 20 top myths about nutrition that can help you weed out the good information from the bad.

1. All fats are bad.

Unsaturated fats like Omega-3s found in fish and monounsaturated fats found in olive oil, canola oil, nuts and avocados all aid in good health. Saturated fats from animal products and and trans-fats, partially hydrogenated oils, are the ones that should be used sparingly.

2. Eggs are bad.

It’s true that eggs have cholesterol and fat, but there is no evidence that the cholesterol in eggs raises bad cholesterol in blood and the fat in eggs is unsaturated.

3. Avoid carbohydrates.

The recent popularity of the Atkins and South Beach diets have given carbs a bad name. In reality complex carbohydrates found in whole grains and some vegetables are necessary requirements. They provide the body with energy and lots of nutrients.

4. Eat fat free or low fat foods and you won’t gain
weight.

A calorie is a calorie whether it’s full of fat or not.

5. Never eat after 8pm.

Again, a calorie is a calorie no matter what time of day it’s eaten, but remember the later you eat the less time you have to burn off those calories consumed.

6. Weight loss products and diet supplements
labeled “natural” or “herbal” are safe.

Not necessarily. Little or no testing is done on these products. Many herbs can react with medications
that are being taken for legitimate reasons. Check
with a doctor before taking these products.

7. Fresh produce is always better than frozen or canned.

Not always. If produce is frozen or canned immediately, the product can retain a lot of its vitamins and minerals. Fresh produce, if left in the air or sun too long, can loose some.

8. Becoming a vegetarian will help you loose weight.

Only if you make healthy vegetarian choices. Candy
and chips are still allowed on a vegetarian diet.

9. Honey is a better choice than sugar.

Honey and sugar are almost chemically indistinguishable.

10. Brown sugar is better nutritionally than white
sugar.

Brown sugar is white sugar with added molasses. It’s no better than plain white sugar.

11. Sugar can cause diabetes.

If you do not have diabetes, the amount of sugar you intake will not cause you to contract it. However, being overweight and inactive can lead to diabetes.

12. Skipping meals can help you loose weight.

When a body is hungry it goes into starvation mode and the metabolism slows down, lowering the rate at
which it burns calories.

13. Dairy products cause mucus.

This has recently been proven false. It’s no longer necessary to avoid milk or cheese when you have a cold.

14. Always avoid fast food restaurants.

Many fast food restaurants offer a limited amount of
healthy options such as salads with low fat
dressings and fruit. They are fine occasionally
if you’re in a hurry. Because even fast food is
better than no food at all.

15. Snacking makes you fat.

If you eat healthy snacks, they can actually help control your appetite. You’ll be less likely to binge on cookies and more likely to eat moderately at
meals.

16. Caffeine is an appetite stimulant.

There is no evidence that shows that caffeine stimulates the appetite.

17. Diet drinks will help you loose weight.

Without lowering the calories you consume and increasing your activity, diet drinks alone will do nothing. In fact the aspertame and artificial sweetners in diet drinks are more harmful than the sugar in non-diet sodas

18. 0 grams of trans-fat in a product means it’s
trans-fat free.

If you look at the ingredients and see partially hydrogenated oil, it still contains trans-fat, just not enough to be counted.

19. Foods like celery and grapefruit burn calories.

There is no food that burns calories.

20. You should never eat cookies, candy or cake.

Everyone needs a treat once in a while.

Insulin Sensitivity

If you have Type 2 Diabetes or pre-diabetes, insulin is actually being secreted with abundance in your blood but because of several factors such as excess belly fat and physical inactivity, insulin can’t bind to the sugar in your blood and have it stored in the largest body organ which are your muscles.

This problem is called insulin resistance which if not addressed can lead to diabetes complications, heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol leading to heart attacks and strokes. This resistance problem is now seen among Type 1 diabetics as well since Americans have become physically inactive with an all time high body weight; both of which are major contributors to insulin resistance and consequently to pre-diabetes and diabetes.

But worse yet, since insulin is available in your blood in large quantity, it can still perform it’s other task, which is to store fat in your belly area. The large amounts of fats from the fatty burgers, fried food and the extra large sugar laden soft drinks that you consume every day have no place to go but your body fat and arteries. By the way, sugar from foods and beverages (soft drinks, latte, sweet tea and juices) are readily transformed into fat. Weight gain along with physical inactivity keep on fueling the insulin resistance problem making your diabetes worse and if you’re pre-diabetic you become a full-blown diabetic.

Insulin’s function is 3 folds: 1) The uptake of Glucose (sugar) from the blood and storing it in the liver and muscles in the form of Glycogen, 2) The up take of fat, from the food we eat, from our blood and storing it in the fatty deposits in the belly area and under the skin all over the body, 3) the uptake of protein, from the food we eat, from the blood and storing it in the muscle.

T he most efficient ways diabetics and pre-diabetics can become more sensitive to the effects of insulin is weight loss by making balanced food choices AND ACTIVITY . Activity is necessary for all people of all ages and gender. But for diabetics it is crucial to defeat this deadly disease and it’s complications. Sadly, only a minority of all those diabetics, pre-diabetics lead an active lifestyle, the rest remain sedentary and suffer the worsening consequences of their condition.

Why activity? Because muscles in our bodies which are the largest of all the body’s organs use sugar as the main form of fuel. So when you become more diligently active your muscles will burn energy and become partially depleted of Sugar. Now when your insulin is secreted from you pancreas it will bind to the sugar in your blood and will store it in your muscles in the form of a substance called “Glycogen”.

So when you become more active not only you are causing the sugar in your blood to be reduced but also you are making your insulin more sensitive and you will be losing weight in the process hence resolving the problem of insulin resistance; triple positive whammy to your health.

Why weight loss? When fat builds up in your belly area around your vital organs two very deadly things happen. Research confirms that the fat in your belly area contributes directly to artery disease and Plaque formation that block your arteries leading to heart disease and heart attacks. Also, research confirms that the more belly fat you have the lower the levels of a hormone called “Adiponectin” which is an essential hormone to make your insulin work best. As belly fat goes up the lower this substance becomes and the more insulin resistant you become. So as you lose weight this situation is reversed and your insulin returns to normal function.

You can become active in a gradual process aiming at walking about 10 to 12 thousand steps daily. Refer to “Lifestyle Makeover for Diabetics and Pre-Diabetics” for more details on Lifestyle Makeover tips.

In fact, to visually witness the blood sugar lowering effect of walking, try this at home with your sugar monitor. Take a sugar reading before a 20-minute brisk walking bout and take another reading immediately after. Before your eyes you will witness how your sugar dropped as a result of your muscles taking up the sugar from your blood.

T he answer is ACTIVITY, ACTIVITY AND MORE ACTIVITY. Along with balanced food choices you achieve ultimate blood sugar control and reversal of pre-diabetes.

Out of control diabetes and diabetes complications are very deadly but you are in charge and you have the capacity to bring diabetes under control. Consequently you can expect to live with controlled diabetes or reverse it and enjoy a natural lifespan complication free and the best quality of life. Diabetes and pre-diabetes can be totally managed and even reversed but only when you start making balanced and favorable lifestyle choices.

Diabetes and Weight Loss – What Can the Diabetic Eat?

When you have diabetes it does not mean that you have to eat bland food for the rest of your life. You do although need to learn what is going to be good for you and what is bad for your body. You need to create a healthy diet that will keep your life healthy and give you the nutrients that your body needs to keep heart disease away.

What is really bad for the diabetic to eat? This is what would be a bad diet for everyone else. The answer is a diet that is high in fat, salt, sugar and the over processed foods that you can find. This sort of foods is often filled with poly saturated fats or trans fat, which cannot be burned off through exercise. They are going to stay in the body and clog up the arteries. If you have diabetes it can be the worst thing for your diet and this will increase your chances of getting heart disease, stroke, and other heart problems that can lead to complications.

This will not mean that you have to cut out the fat forever, however some fats are healthy and necessary. It is very important if you have diabetes to know which fats and foods are good for you and which fats are harmful for you too. Fats are found mostly in processed foods and found in most of the fast food restaurants and are not healthy. Omega –3 fatty acids are found more in fish and are very good for diabetics due to the fact that they can help decrease the risk of sudden heart attack. When you are working on your diet, you need to remember that you can still have some sugars and fats but in lower amounts. The way that these foods act with your body will increase the chances of health problems happening in your body. You need to eliminate them from your diet so that you can have the good effects for your health that your body needs for a certain amount of fat to be healthier.

You need to control your intake of carbohydrates because it is important for diabetics. This is because of the excess carbohydrates will turn into sugars in the body and diabetics should be careful about the amount of getting too many carbohydrates in their diet. This will affect their blood sugar levels. Diabetics can learn about how to count their carbs from nutritionists or a book that is good on the subject. This can help them in deciding how much to eat and with what type of meal.

When you are a diabetic it does not mean that you have to limit your diet to foods that have no taste. You can still have the foods that you want as long as you keep the portions under control. It is about taking control so that you are not eating more than what your body can process and that is the diet that everyone should have in their life to be healthy and happy too.
