Quick question about diabetes diet?

I have pre-exsisting diabetes and I have to do the whole finger stick 5 times a day to make sure my blood sugar level doesn’t exceed 140. I’ve been doing pretty good with eating plenty of fruits and vegetable. My question is if I eat rice and pasta (which I’m not supposed to eat because it supposedly raises my blood sugar level) and my BSL doesn’t exceed 140 will it still affect my unborn child? Will it hurt me even if I’m not exceeding the 140 mark. When I eat them my BSL is mostly around 128 or so.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like your A1c should be great. Keep your bg under 140 through out your entire pregnancy, make sure you are seeing your endo (If you don’t have one now would be a good time to get one) and have a happy healthy pregnancy. It sounds like you already have great control. Congrats on that. I know how hard it is. Feel free to stop by:

Help please me please! Could this be diabetes? ?

Here is the list of symptoms I have:
Very thirsty
Very tired/not sleeping well
Have mood flashes, especially anger
Getting hungry, about 2 hours or so after I eat
Drying lips
Back/Shoulder pain
Feel faint/dizzy (not very often)

I am 14 years old, and am 5’6′ and 145 pounds. I exercise 3-5 times a week. It is not my time of the month yet either. My diet is fairly healthy, like I choose fruit over chocolate, diet over regular soda, etc I do eat my fair share of junk food but I am trying to cut it out a replace it with fruit and vegetables. I do eat, a lot my friends tell me. I am not pregnant either, so that is not it. My grandma had diabetes and I think my mom might too.

to second poster, I am 140 pounds not 145 my mistake, but my BMI is in the healthy range (124-147)
i think I am paranoid, but it never hurts to check it could just be puberty right?

Possibly, but who is to say?… I would see a doctor and explain your symptoms and say you just dont feel normal, mention that you have researched about diabetes and see what they say!!

I f it is diabetes you will need to go to the hospital but, dont be scared everything turns out fine in the end!!… I f you want to email me yo can if it is diabetes… I am always here so you can talk to me :) … And besides it runs in the family so theres a good probability that you are a diabetic…HopeI helped!!

Diabetes food recommendations, spices to take, type of yoga to do can any one suggest.?

I am diabetic last 3 years, now fasting 140 and pp220,last one month started doing exercises and walking 2 kms daily.i need advises on food menu to be followed, fruits, vegetables list, type of yoga(Somebody says with yoga we can stop medcines),i am non veg eater, weight 98 kgs, height 165 cms.I have to cut short my weight quick.Presently taking melmet500-3 times and diamicron 60 twice a day ..suggestions please.

Here is a list of 2,480 foods. It has the Index and load of foods with carbs. This should be your bible for eating for life. No tricky carb. counting. Heres the website.http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

The glycemic index (GI) is a numerical system of measuring how much of a rise in circulating blood sugar a carbohydrate triggers–the higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response. So a low GI food will cause a small rise, while a high GI food will trigger a dramatic spike. A list of carbohydrates with their glycemic values is shown below. A GI is 70 or more is high, a GI of 56 to 69 inclusive is medium, and a GI of 55 or less is low.

The glycemic load (GL) is a relatively new way to assess the impact of carbohydrate consumption that takes the glycemic index into account, but gives a fuller picture than does glycemic index alone. A GI value tells you only how rapidly a particular carbohydrate turns into sugar. It doesn’t tell you how much of that carbohydrate is in a serving of a particular food. You need to know both things to understand a food’s effect on blood sugar. That is where glycemic load comes in. The carbohydrate in watermelon, for example, has a high GI. But there isn’t a lot of it, so watermelon’s glycemic load is relatively low. A GL of 20 or more is high, a GL of 11 to 19 inclusive is medium, and a GL of 10 or less is low.

Foods that have a low GL almost always have a low GI. Foods with an intermediate or high GL range from very low to very high GI.

Both GI and GL are listed here. The GI is of foods based on the glucose index–where glucose is set to equal 100. The other is the glycemic load, which is the glycemic index divided by 100 multiplied by its available carbohydrate content (i.e. carbohydrates minus fiber) in grams. (The "Serve size (g)" column is the serving size in grams for calculating the glycemic load; for simplicity of presentation I have left out an intermediate column that shows the available carbohydrates in the stated serving sizes.) Take, watermelon as an example of calculating glycemic load. Its glycemic index is pretty high, about 72. According to the calculations by the people at the University of Sydney’s Human Nutrition Unit, in a serving of 120 grams it has 6 grams of available carbohydrate per serving, so its glycemic load is pretty low, 72/100*6=4.32, rounded to 4.

So now your search is over for what you can eat and not to eat. Now to Yoga , its a great way to relax but will never cure Diabetes. Keep up the exercise , it as important as your meds.
Take care my friend>

Diabetes Home Remedies

Diabetes Home Remedies

Until date, no absolute cure for diabetes has been found. Research is ongoing in this area, since diabetes brings with it a myriad of other complications, if not kept in control through proper diet, exercise and medication if required.

Diabetic patients must realize that they have a complicated disorder, which continues for lifetime. During pregnancy, diabetes can be serious and diabetic babies always weigh more than normal.

Older people gradually tend to gain weight and they develop a mild form of diabetes because of a strain on their pancreas. Controlling weight can help control diabetes.

As said above, diabetes brings with it a host of complications. Diabetic patients are more prone to infections of the skin, such as boils, carbuncles and itching. Hardening of the arteries occurs much more frequently in diabetic patients. Heart attacks are also more common in such patients.

Cataracts occur more frequently in older diabetics and also in patients who have had diabetes for five years or longer.

So, here are some simple home remedies to control the blood glucose level. They help, the only condition being that it must be followed regularly and diligently.

« The powder of the seeds of fenugreek (Methi) taken two to three times a day helps control the sugar in blood and urine.

« Diabetes can also be controlled when you drink water kept overnight, with tender leaves of guava tree and sadabahar plant soaked in it.

« Boil a few leaves each of tulsi (Basil), neem, jamun, bel, along with 4-5 corns of pepper in a glass of water and drink two times a day.

« Morning and evening walk for at least 45 minutes is very essential to control this disease.

« Eat at least 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder daily.

« Consume 1 tablespoon juice of bitter gourd (karela) every morning, It may not instantly give results, but will definitely reduce the intensity of the condition.

« Soak fenugreek seeds about one teaspoon in water at night, drink that water in the morning and chew and eat the soaked seeds. This helps reduce the blood sugar.

« Wash a green banana and peel it. Put the peel in a jar, fill with water and drink this water three times a day. This water will lower the sugar level. Change the peel every other day and refill the jar with water as you drink.

« Take 15 fresh mango leaves and boil them in 1 glass of water. Keep them overnight. Filter and drink the next morning.

« Grapefruit is considered quite beneficial. Eat three grapefruits three times in a day.

« Indian gooseberry (amla), is a rich source of vitamin C and serves as one of the best home remedies for diabetes. Take 1 tablespoon of gooseberry juice and mix it with a cup of bitter gourd juice. Consume the mixture daily for about 2 months.

« Garlic helps blood circulation and regulates sugar level.

« Drink 1 litre of cinnamon water daily. Cinnamon contains a chemical that helps to use blood sugar naturally in body. Add 3 table spoon of cinnamon to 1 litre of boiling water. Simmer for 20 minutes in a low flame, and then strain the mixture.

« A teaspoon of black cumin seeds (kalonji) to be boiled in a glass of water, till it reduces to half. If taken regularly, it helps to control the blood sugar.

« Prepare a mixture by adding equal quantities of turmeric powder and dried gooseberry powder with honey; or drink a mixture containing equal quantities of gooseberry juice and fresh turmeric juice in an empty stomach regularly.

« Prepare coffee with powdered fried fenugreek and wheat, taken in equal quantities.

« Eat fresh, tender curry leaves twice a day to reduce sugar.

« Take some tender guava leaves, and 3 grams of cumin seeds. Crush them together. Boil with one glass of water till reduces to half. Drink 2-3 times a day.

« Drink 8 glass of water in the morning on an empty stomach and walk for one hour.

Diet for a diabetic patient as prescribed in Ayurveda:

The main aim is to help the body absorb the sugar into the system.

Take about one kg of curd made from cow’s milk along with various types of gourds, but without salt. The greener the vegetables, the more valuable it would be. Sour fruits like tomatoes, oranges, pineapple, jamun could also be taken. The patient can also consume one or two chapattis made out of unsieved flour.

Cereals and sugar preparations should be avoided for some time. Hipbath is also recommended, as it is extremely beneficial in the case of diabetes, particularly for patients suffering from constipation.

Yoga is also advised by yoga specialists, which has proved useful in dealing with the disease.

Toddlers With Diabetes – Tips For Success

If your child is under the age of two and has been diagnosed with diabetes, know that there are many alternatives and options available that will control this condition and ensure your child has a happy, healthy, and normal childhood.

The number of toddlers with diabetes is increasing, so know that you are not alone. Diabetes is a condition where the pancreas does not process sugar effectively.

Since there are many different types of diabetes, ask your physician to explain the exact condition that affects your child.

Also, consider seeking out parents of other diabetic toddlers in your area to glean information and support from individuals who are in your shoes.

  • Learn About The Disease *

Diabetes can be frightening to anyone, but especially a parent of a toddler with diabetes.

Instead of allowing the disease to take over your life, strive to learn as much as possible about the specific type of diabetes that affects your child.

Also, be sure to learn the side effects of diabetes and any symptoms that you should be aware of that are associated with a potential problem caused by the disease.

By educating yourself, you take away some of the unexpected associated with any disease that affects a child.

Finally, learn about the proper ways to care for your child and exactly what medications or medical techniques are necessary in controlling this condition.

Many toddlers with diabetes can control the condition by switching to a favorable diet.

  • Test Blood Sugars Often *

Especially with children , testing blood sugar can be difficult.

However, this task is necessary in order to determine if your child is having problems so that you can stop any potentially deadly problems before they start.

Since a blood sugar test typically involves a pin prick, consider ways to make the entire process less scary and painful for your child.

There are several high quality testing monitors on the market that are made especially for youngsters with diabetes.

Also, speak with your child and let him or her know the exact reason why this test needs to be performed.

Education is the key to understanding.

  • Develop A Schedule *

Schedules are important in the life of any child, but especially one that has been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.

By developing a schedule for your child and ensuring that he or she sticks to it, you are working diligently to control the diabetes.

This schedule is especially important when it comes to meal times. Most diabetics need to eat smaller meals more frequently.

With small children, consider developing a game that will allow him or her to stick to the schedule without feeling regimented.

As you child grows and enters into schooling, you should maintain this schedule to prevent potential problems from developing during the day.

  • Plan For The Worst *

If you properly control the disease, the risks of complications or problems are less likely to happen.

However, you should always have a plan in mind in the event the worst does happen.

Create a special diabetes station in your home and be sure that everyone in your home (even another child) knows how to use the equipment properly.

You may also need to teach your child that suffers from diabetes on the correct way to use the medical equipment in case he or she needs to self medicate.

By developing a plan, everyone will know exactly what to do and panic will be avoided so that the problem can be solved immediately. This is also the case when you are traveling.

Carry a small kit just in case your diabetic child should have to need medicine to stop a potential problem.

Start Taking Magnesium and Chromium Rich Diets to Control your Diabetes

Manganese - Manganese is vital in the production of natural insulin and therefore important in the treatment of diabetes. It is found in citrus fruits, in the outer covering of nuts, grains and in the green leaves of edible plants.

The loss of magnesium in diabetic ketosis has been known for many years. About 37 percent of infants born to diabetic mothers have been found to be lacking in this mineral. It has also been found that children aged five to 18 years with well-controlled type-1 diabetes have lows serum magnesium values.

Magnesium - Magnesium also decreases the need for vitamin B6 and if it is increased in the diet, the amount of xanthurenic acid in the blood is reduced, even without vitamin B6 supplement. Moreover, magnesium is also necessary to active enzymes containing vitamin B6. Blood magnesium being particularly low in diabetic, it may be reasonably inferred that diabetes can result from a combined deficiency of vitamin B6 and magnesium. It may therefore, be advisable for any person with diabetes or a family history of the disease to take the at least 500 mg of magnesium and 10 mg of B6 daily.

Magnesium is widely distributed in foods. It forms part of the chlorophyll in green leaves. Other good sources of this mineral are nuts, Soya bean, alfalfa, apple, fig, lemon, peach, almond, whole grains, brown rice, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds.

Chromium - According to Dr. Richard A. Anderson, at the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, whatever the blood sugar problem, chromium tends to normalize it. Dr. Anderson believes that increased prevalence of type-2 diabetes is partly due to a deficiency of chromium in the diet.

Chromium has been found beneficial in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Columbia University scientists, in a study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition established chromium’s benefits for type-2 diabetes. They confirmed that chromium enhances insulin production in the body. Some other researchers have also confirmed that chromium helps stabilize blood sugar and increases energy.

Studies have also revealed that chromium supplements control total cholesterol and triglyceride levels and raise the good or HDL cholesterol. In some patients with impaired glucose tolerance, especially children with protein malnutrition, glucose tolerance showed improvement after they were given chromium supplements.

The recommended daily allowance of chromium is 50 to 100 micrograms. Some foods rich in chromium, besides broccoli, are whole grain cereals, nuts, mushrooms, rhubarb, Bengal gram, kidney beans, Soya beans, black gram, betel leaves, bottle gourd, corn oil, brewer’s yeast, pomegranate and pineapple.
